Good things to know
A few of the questions we hear most often, about singing with us, our music, and getting involved. If you don't see yours here, we're glad to answer it in person.
Joining, visiting & rehearsals
Who can join the chorus?
Everyone is welcome. We're an all-voices chorus, which means we sing together across every range and every background. Whether you've sung for decades or you're just discovering your voice, there's a place for you on the risers.
Do I need to read music?
Not at all. Plenty of our singers learn by ear. We share part-by-part practice tracks so you can listen and rehearse at home, and you always have your section and our director helping you along.
Do I need singing experience?
No formal experience required. If you can match a pitch and you love the sound of harmony, you have what it takes to start. We coach the technique and guide you into your part, step by step.
Is there an audition?
Guests are always welcome at our Monday rehearsals, so come sing with us as often as you'd like. After three visits, you'll be invited to audition for membership.
When and where do you rehearse?
We rehearse every Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:30 at Olympia First Baptist Church, 904 Washington St SE, Olympia, WA 98501. Come a few minutes early so we can say hello and help you feel at home.
What is a rehearsal like?
We warm up together, learn music one section at a time, then bring the parts together into full, ringing harmony. Expect clear goals, steady encouragement, a few laughs, and singers who are genuinely glad you came.
What if I have to miss a rehearsal?
Life happens, and we understand. Let your section leader know when you'll be out, use the rehearsal recordings to catch up, and jump back in when you can. We keep attendance friendly and built on staying in touch.
What we sing & where you'll hear us
What does "all-voices" mean?
It means every part is open to every singer. We listen for your range, your tone, and where you feel most comfortable, then match you to one of the four parts: the melody (lead), the high harmony (tenor), the inner harmony (baritone), or the foundation (bass).
What kind of songs do you sing?
Our music is wide and always sung a cappella in four-part harmony: classic barbershop, jazz and swing, Broadway, pop, inspirational pieces, and seasonal favorites. We choose every song for the feeling it carries and the story it lets us tell.
Do you compete?
Yes, mostly at the regional level with the Evergreen District, and sometimes beyond. Contests give us expert feedback and a fun goal to grow toward. They sharpen our skills, and people always come before scores.
Do you perform in the community?
We do, and it's one of our favorite things. You'll find us at community events, seasonal gatherings, and one or two larger shows each year, sharing close harmony with our South Sound neighbors.
Helping out & booking the chorus
Are there ways to help besides singing?
Absolutely. The chorus runs on many kinds of contribution: planning events, hospitality, social media, design, fundraising, setup, and more. If you'd like to lend a skill, we'll help you find a meaningful way to pitch in.
How do I book the chorus for an event?
We'd love to sing for you. Visit our Book Us page and tell us about your event. Your request goes straight to our chorus manager, who will follow up to talk through the details.
What is barbershop harmony?
It's a rich, all-American style of four-part harmony, sung a cappella, where the chords tune so cleanly they seem to ring with extra notes. For the full picture, visit our What is Barbershop? page.
Come find out in person
The best way to get a feel for the chorus is to visit a Monday rehearsal. Every voice is welcome.
